Today’s Image of the Day from NASA features the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest, which extend from southern British Columbia down to northern California.

The photo was taken by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS), and captures the snowy peaks of the the Cascade Mountains on April 13, 2020.

Rising to an elevation of 10,525 feet, Glacier Peak is one of the most active and youngest volcanoes in the mountain range.

In the nearby Salish Sea, the San Juan Islands were designated as a national monument in 2013 by President Barack Obama. The islands host diverse ecosystems ranging from sandy beaches to Douglas fir forests.
