Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency shows the Sun’s corona, or its extended atmosphere, during a total eclipse.

The image is a composite view that captures the moment of totality during last week’s eclipse over South America.

The picture may provide experts with new details about the corona and the structures shaped by the Sun’s magnetic field.

The image was created by the ESA-CESAR team observing the eclipse from ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile, South America
