Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows an ash plume rising from the Ubinas volcano in southern Peru.

Seismic and volcanic activity has been increasing across the region this month, and high winds have carried ash to populated areas.

The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency after ash covered villages and schools, affecting 30,000 people.
