The unique composition of Lake Van •

Last update: November 14th, 2019 at 11:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey.

This body of water is known for being the biggest soda lake on the planet, as well as one of the world’s largest endorheic lakes. Dense concentrations of carbonate species contribute to the remarkable colors that are visible in the photograph, along with detrital materials and some organic matter.

Despite its location in a region known for harsh winters, high levels of salinity prevent Lake Van from freezing.

The image was captured by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station on September 12, 2016.
