Last update: October 17th, 2019 at 9:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Williams Flats fire in eastern Washington, which was ignited by lightning during a morning thunderstorm.

The fire has blazed through pine forests and grass as it moves along the north shore of the Columbia River in the Colville Indian Reservation.

Since the wildfire broke out on the morning of August 2, 2019, it has burned around 40,000 acres and is now 25% contained.

This natural-color image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
