Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at thick smoke billowing over this week’s wildfires in Southern California.

The photo was taken on December 5, 2017 by NASA research pilot Donald “Stu” Broce from the cockpit of NASA’s high-flying ER-2 aircraft 12 miles up in the sky.

The ER-2 aircraft is based out of NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California.
