Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at Tropical Cyclone Gita in the south Pacific Ocean.

The storm is one of the strongest to ever make a direct hit on Tongapatu, having already battered American Samoa with wind speeds of 145 miles per hour.

This image was captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.
