Tropical Cyclone Idai threatens East Africa • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows Tropical Cyclone Idai as it moves across the Mozambique Channel, threatening a region of East Africa that has already been hit hard by the same weather system.

When this photo was taken on March 11, 2019, Idai was a category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. A week prior, the storm had dumped heavy rainfall on Mozambique and Malawi and triggered deadly floods.

Idai is expected to make landfall on Mozambique later this week, with a second round of heavy rainfall and wind.

This image was captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.
