Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows Typhoon Jongdari as it approached the coast of Japan on July 27th with top wind speeds of 120 miles per hour.

The storm is expected to impact the same western region of Japan where flooding and landslides claimed 220 lives and displaced 4,000 people earlier this month. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and tens of thousands have been advised to evacuate, as residents of western Japan brace for dangerous storm surges and torrential rainfall.
