Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the smoke rising from dozens of fires in northeastern Australia during the last week of November 2018.

Fueled by an unusual heat wave, small fires had been burning throughout the month across Queensland. The wildfires became more intense after thunderstorms swept across the region with lightning and heavy winds on November 24.

As the hot and windy weather is expected to continue, firefighters are bracing for the fires to strengthen and residents are being urged to abide by evacuation orders.

This image was captured on November 26 by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.
