Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the widespread impact left behind by massive wildfires in the western United States.

The Carr Fire near Redding became the sixth most destructive fire in California’s history by August 3rd, consuming over 131,896 acres and more than a thousand homes.

These images were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
