The snowy season has arrived in Yosemite National Park •

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the first significant snowfall of the year in Yosemite National Park.

The snowy season got a later start than usual in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where the park is located.

In the summer, snow that has fallen high up in the mountains melts and travels down into the valleys, providing about 30 percent of California’s fresh water supply.

This image was captured on December 2 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
