Description

The species of the genus Monilaria grow as sparsely branched, deciduous shrubs with a stature height of up to 20 centimeters. Their short, thickened internodes reach diameters of 10 to 20 millimeters. The first pair of leaves of the year is completely fused together, more or less hemispherical, has a small tip on the underside slightly keeled and forms a nearly spherical body of up to 10 millimeters. The second pair of leaves is about 10 inches long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide. It is flattened above and fused only to about one tenth of the length. The epidermis contains variously shaped and different sized bladder cells. The single, stalked, terminal flowers appear from the second pair of leaves. Its papillös pedicel is up to 10 centimeters long. There are 5 spirally arranged sepals present. The petals and the filiform staminodes are white, salmon, pink-pink or purple-red. The capsule fruits are 5 (rarely 6) -fächrig. Their spring strips are diverging, the wing covers are wide. Closure body missing. They contain egg-shaped, smooth seeds .
