Stiff Bluestar

(Amsonia rigida)

Description

This rare species of the deer-resistant blue star is found only in open, swampy wetlands from coastal Georgia though the Florida Panhandle. Despite this origin, Amsonia rigida has fared superbly in the driest parts of our garden. The 3' tall cinnamon-brown stalks arise from a woody caudex, clothed in narrow green leaves and topped in early spring with terminal clusters of near-white flowers. Amsonia rigida doesn't ever develop the large bulk of Amsonia hubrichtii and, consequently, is easier to fit into smaller gardens. We think you're really going to like this.
