Description

Lepidocaryum tenue is a native of tropical South America palm species . She is the only member of the genus Lepidocaryum . The representatives are multi-stemmed, unreinforced fan palms . They are dioecious and flower several times. The trunk is upright and arises from a slender rhizome . The internodes are short, the leaf scars rather unremarkable. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30. The leaves are small and palmat (hand-shaped). The leaf sheath tears towards the petiole , and is often covered with a very dense coat of hair. The petiole is long. A hastula is usually missing. The leaf blade is divided by a few, reaching to the leaf approaching cracks into a few, pointed, different width segments.
