Description

Nandina is a monotypic genus of plants belonging to the Berberidaceae family. 1 Its unique species : Nandina domestica Thunb, Is native to eastern Asia from the Himalaya to Japan . It is the only member of the monotypic genus Nandina . It is an erect evergreen shrub up to 2 m tall by 1.5 m wide, with numerous branched stems that generally grow from ground level. Bright leaves are sometimes deciduous in colder areas, 50-100 cm long, two to three times pinnate compound, with individual leaflets 4-11 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide. The young leaves in spring are bright pink to red then green, the old leaves turn red or purple again before they fall. The flowers are white, and are formed in early summer in conical groups held well above the foliage. The fruit is bright red in the form of berries of 5-10 mm diameter, ripening is late autumn and often persists throughout the winter.
