Description

Cleistocactus pungens is a species in the genus Cleistocactus from the family of cactus (Cactaceae). The specific epithet pungens means 'piercing'. Cleistocactus pungens grows shrubby with spreading stems and reaches heights of growth of 1 to 1.5 meters at diameters of 3 to 4 centimeters. There are about 13 wavy ribs . The then initially brown, later gray areoles are close together. The straight, needle-like, stiff, protruding thorns are initially dark reddish brown and later gray. The usually 2 to 5 middle spines are 2 to 5 centimeters, the 8 to 12 spines 2 to 12 millimeters long. The horizontally protruding, purple flowers are slightly bent down over the pericarp . They are up to 7.5 inches long and have a diameter of 5 millimeters. The spherical, red fruits reach diameters of up to 2 centimeters.
