Description

Espostoa ritteri is a plant species in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet ritteri honors the German cacti specialist Friedrich Ritter. Espostoa ritteri grows like a tree with branched shoots and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. The cylindrical, dark green shoots have a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. There are 18 to 22 transversely grooved ribs. Numerous white hairs arise from the white areoles on it. The single thin, reddish to black central spine is 0.7 to 2 inches long. The 25 thin radial spines are reddish brown to yellow to white. The cephalium is yellowish. The white flowers are up to 9 centimeters long. The crimson fruits are about 3 centimeters long and 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Espostoa ritteri is common in Peru in the regions of Cajamarca and Amazonas in the valley of the Río Marañón below an altitude of 900 meters. The first description was in 1960 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining.
