Gymnocalycium neuhuberi

Description

Gymnocalycium neuhuberi is a species in the genus Gymnocalycium from the family of cactus (Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Austrian cactus collector Gert Neuhuber (* 1937). Gymnocalycium neuhuberi grows individually with gray-green, flattened spherical shoots that reach heights of growth of up to 4.8 centimeters in diameters of 7 centimeters. The nine to twelve wavy ribs are conspicuously divided into humps. The circular to oval areoles are bare. The needle-shaped, stiff, straight to slightly curved spines are yellowish. The middle thorns, initially there is only one, later there are four, standing crosswise. The usually nine spines are 1.5 to 2 inches long. The top two pairs are shorter and measure only 1.2 inches. The funnel-shaped light purple flowers have a length of 2.7 to 3.6 centimeters and reach a diameter of 2.6 to 3.4 centimeters. The obovate fruits are dark green and reach a diameter of 1 to 1.2 centimeters and a length of 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters.
