Mammillaria hernandezii

Description

Mammillaria hernandezii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet honors Eulalio Hernandez, the nephew and companion of the Mexican cactus collector Felipe Otero. Mammillaria hernandezii grows predominantly individually. The depressed, spherical, fresh green shoots are 2.5 to 4.5 inches in diameter. The pyramidal warts are without milk juice . The axillae are studded with short white wool. Central thorns are missing. The 17 to 25 marginal spines radiate, being slightly bent back and not interlocking. They are white and are 0.12 to 0.22 inches long. The cherry red to light magenta (rarely white) flowers are up to 2 inches long. The creamy white to pale pink fruits grow 1 to 1.4 inches long and 0.25 to 0.3 inches in diameter. One fifth of the fruits remain in the plant body. After maturing they dry up quickly. They contain black seeds .
