Description

Valerianella is a genus of plant in family Caprifoliaceae. Many plants of this genus are known by the common name corn salad or cornsalad, although that name most often refers to Valerianella locusta. They are annual herbs . Dicotomically branched stems. Hermaphrodite flowers , in dense, cimosa inflorescences . Calyx with 1-6 teeth or absent, persistent in fruiting as a non-feathery appendage. Corolla with short tube, infundibuliform, slightly gibbous and 5 lobes slightly unequal. Androceo with 3 stamens. Trifid stigma. Fruit with the 2 sterile cavities more or less developed and often with a layer of spongy tissue of varying thickness.
