Description

Cyperus capitatus or chuzos , is a plant of the family of the Cyperaceae . Perennial plant that forms serpentine stolons under the sand. The stems are round and striated, with fluted leaves , long and recumbent. At the end of the stem are the spikes gathered in a thick compact head and supported by patent bracts . It has stems of 10-50 cm. Sheets of (1-) 2,5-6 (-7) mm in width, with the revolutionary margin. Capituliform inflorescences, with 4-6 unequal bracts , of revolutionary margin, very widened at the base, the lower ones at least surpassing the inflorescence. Spikelets 6-17 (-20) x 2.5-4 mm, oblong to lanceolate, with 4-14 flowers and apterous axis. Glumes of 5-7.5 x 2.3-4 mm, from ovate to lanceolate, with a mucron of 0.5-2.5 mm, dark red, with broad scarious margin. Androceo with 3 stamens. Style with 3 styling arms. Aquenios of 2.5-3.3 x 0.9-1.5 mm, trigones, oblong to obovate, gray or yellowish. It has a chromosome number of 2n = 72. It flowers from March to June (August).
