Description

Shrubs 0.5-5 m tall; stems densely leafy, usually branched, often with short, leafy side branches. Leaves in whorls of 4-6 per node, rarely only opposite on rapidly growing branches, borne on upper 6-15 nodes, those at a node subequal, symmetrical, thick and firm-chartaceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic to narrowly elliptic or narrowly elliptic-oblanceolate, 5-25 cm long, 1-4 cm wide, upper surface with usually impressed veins, sparsely appressed hirtellous, lower surface with moderately raised veins, densely appressed velvety pilose, occasionally only sparsely so, margins entire or rarely serrulate, apex attenuate-acute to acuminate, base attenuate, petioles 1-7 cm long.
