Description

Batemannia colleyi is an epiphytic orchid species native toSouth America. It is a large orchid, which prefers cold to warm climates, with caespitose epiphytic growth that has 4 -sided cylindrical pseudobulbs, glossy, olive green in color subtended by a few short scarious sheaths bearing 2 deciduous, elliptic-lanceolate leaves, petiolate, acuminate. It flowers in spring in a pale green-white, 20 cm, cylindrical, basal, arching inflorescence with 2-7 flowers arranged in a racemose inflorescence arising with pseudobulb new growth with large, hooded, floral bracts. with long-lasting, fragrant flowers arranged below the leaves. It is found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia in humid virgin forests as a large size, on trunks in dense shade at altitudes of 200 to 1,200 meters. Batemannia – Generic name given in honor of the English botanist James Bateman, who published several books and articles on orchids.
