Description

Broughtonia domingensis is a species of epiphytic orchid native to Central America. It is a small orchid of small size, which prefers warm climates, with epiphytic habits with ovoid to fusiform-cylindrical pseudobulbs bearing 2-3 leaves, linear ligulate, unequal round or bilobed apically with serrulate margins. It blooms most often in spring and summer on a 60 cm long, slender, panicle-shaped inflorescence with slightly fragrant flowers, or not, with the flowers grouped at the apex opening successively over a long period. It does best in wood and should be given partial shade and moderate humidity, but likes xerophilous conditions in the winter. It is found on the island of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico on Mona Island, where it is found in dry coastal scrub forest at sea level up to heights of 200 meters. Broughtonia domingensis was described by (Lindl.) Rolfe and published in The Gardeners' Chronicle 1889. Broughtonia is a genus of orchids (family Orchidaceae) native to the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles. The genus is abbreviated Bro in trade journals.
