Description

Calanthe madagascariensis RolfeformerHook.f, 1901 is a plantof the Orchidaceae family, endemicto Madagascar. It is a terrestrial orchid of small size, with 20-50 cm tallstems, with flattened pseudobulbs from which originate 5-10 elliptic-lanceolate, plicate leaves, 10-13 cm long and 3-4.5 cm broad, with wavy margin. Theinflorescence is composed of 10-15 pinkto purple flowers, with ellipticalsepals up to 15 mm long with 5 veins, slightly smaller petals with 3 veins, and a trilobed labellumwith two basal calluses and a longspurabout 2 cm. The species is widespread inthe rainforestsof northern and easternMadagascar, from 600 to 2100 m of altitude.
