Late Cockscomb

Description

The late cockscomb (Scientific name Rhinanthus serotinus ( Schönh. ) Oborny , 1884 ) is a plant herbaceous with delicate yellow flowers, belonging to the family of Broomrape family . The name of the genus ( Rhinanthus ) was assigned by the Swedish biologist and author Carl von Linné (Rashult, 23 May 1707 - Uppsala , 10 January 1778) in 1737, combining two Greek terms : rhin or rhinòs (= nose) and ànthos (= flower) and refers to the particular shape of the flower (nasuto flower). The common name (late rooster crest) refers to a certain resemblance that the flower has with the head of the rooster, in particular the serrated bracts reminiscent of the crest of the feathered; while the specific name serotinus(= late, late flowering, autumnal, end of season) refers to the flowering period. The average height of these plants varies from 20 to 50 cm. The biological form is scaposa terophyta ( T scap ), are herbaceous plants that differ from other biological forms because, being annual, they overcome the adverse season in the form of seed, they are also provided with a flowering axis erected with few leaves. They are also semi- parasitic plants (ie they still contain chlorophyll ) and are provided with one or more austori connected to the host roots to obtain nutrients.
