Description

Andropogon (common names: beard grass, bluestem grass, broomsedge) is a widespread genus of plants in the grass family, native to much of Asia, Africa, and the Americas as well as southern Europe and various oceanic islands. They are perennial, cespitose plants . Leaves with membranous ligule, short, ciliate at the base. Inflorescence composed of 2 clusters digitadamente arranged. Spikelets geminated, articulated below the glumes , slightly compressed dorsivly, unequally; the bottom of each seated pair, with 1 lower flower reduced to the motto and another superior hermaphrodite; the superior pedunculada, with 1 lower flower reduced to the motto and another male superior. Glumes longer than flowers; the lower one with 7-11 nerves and 2 keels; the top trinervada. Motto of the hermaphrodite flowers with 1 long and geniculate terminal edge; that of male flowers with 1 short terminal edge. Palea very reduced. Glabrous Lodicules Androceo with 3 stamens.Caryopsis with embryo of c. 2/5 of its length.
