Description

Tufted perennial from a woody rootstock with erect to ascending stems 10-20cm or more in length.Basal leaves narrowly spathulate,upper leaves linear to narrowly lanceolate,up to or exceeding 1.5cm in length.Racemes terminal only,composed of fifteen to fifty flowers,when in bud in the axils of long slender bracts.Flowers to 6mm or more long,generally mauve-pink but also blue,purple or red,late spring to summer.Central and eastern Europe,extending to Sweden,Spain and Italy,in meadows and open woods.P.c.var.pedemontana is the name given to forms from the Alps.
