Pohlia Moss

Description

The moss grows fiercely or in loose to dense lawns. The upright plants are up to 2.5 centimeters high, rarely higher, yellowish-green to bluish-green and dry metallic glossy. The lanceolate leaves, slightly descending on the stems, are dry-erect, protruding, moist spreading. The leaf margins are flat or bent back, below whole margins, perforated at the top. The laminas of the center of the leaf are extended rhombic to rectilinear rectangular, 6 to 9 (rarely to 11) micrometers wide and thin-walled. On the edge is usually a series with narrower and longer cells. At the base of the leaf they are shorter and wider than those of the leaf-center.The species is diocese . The up to 3 centimeter long Seta is orange to reddish. The sporic capsule extends pear-shaped and horizontal to nodding, the capsule neck is clearly developed. The external peristome is yellow and papillous, the internal hyaline and fine papillous. Spores are 15 to 23 micrometers in size and papillosed.Pohlia proligera is one of several Pohlia species with bulbs ( broths ) in the leaf axes. These are numerous in the upper leaf axes of sterile plants. They are 150 to 500 micrometers long and up to 60 micrometers wide.
