Redberry Juniper

(Juniperus arizonica)

galery

Description

Juniperus arizonica grows as a large evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 3 to 8 meters. The stem usually branches off about one meter above the ground. The thin bark is brown colored and flakes in elongated strips, while the scaly twig is gray. In the case of shrubs the branches are ascending and in trees rather straight from the trunk. They form a flattened spherical or irregular crown . The species can grow out of the tree stump again after forest fires or after the plant has been felled. The scaly like needles with glands are sawn at the edges. The needle top is whitish-blue-green. Juniperus arizonica is dioecious-getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ), and the seeds ripen from late autumn to early winter. The berry-shaped and juicy cones are spherical to egg-shaped at a thickness of 6 to 7 millimeters. To maturity they are reddish-colored and have a white-blue to blue-green tint, as well as gel-borne, orange or dark-red patterns. Each of the cones carries one to two, 4 to 5 millimeters long seed granules.
