He couldn’t understand why it was such a big deal to the guy on the other side of the phone. Why on earth would he drop everything and drive over, just to look at the rock that he had been using as a doorstep? An hour passed before the car pulled up to his driveway, a man stepping out. As soon as the expert saw the rock, he stammered on his words, “Do you know what you’ve found?” Ben now knew that there was no coming back from this. Everything was about to change.

The Expert

He grinned excitedly as the old couple settled on a price for the old farmhouse and all of its surroundings. He couldn’t contain his joy as they shook on it, agreeing that he could move in immediately. He couldn’t believe it! It was now his farm. It had always been his dream but now it was his reality. All he had to do was fill the farm with cows and pigs and take care of the crops that the old man had spent his life’s work on. This was his first time owning a farm, and he was happy to learn the ropes. But as they stepped outside, he noticed something.

Farm Owner

As Ben stepped out of the farmhouse, a grin on his face, he spotted something odd. His eyes focused on the object before trailing to the old man, asking him what it was. He informed him that it was a doorstop. It was a piece of rock that they had been using as a doorstep for over 50 years to keep the barn doors open. The old man told Ben that his father had always told him that the rock was special, but he didn’t buy it.

He Spotted Something

Ben simply nodded and shook the old man’s hand, not asking any more questions. The man told Ben to keep using the rock, winking when he said that it was valuable. Ben didn’t know what the old man meant by that, but he decided to honor his request. Soon enough, the old couple and the real estate agent left, he was finally all alone on his new farm. He now had the keys to the front gate and to every door in the house. He was so happy with his decision, deciding to take a walk around his property.

Taking A Walk

For his entire life, Ben Olsen had dreamed of someday owning his own farm. As a young boy, his father was forced to sell their land and ever since then, Ben was determined to get that lifestyle back. Ben’s plan was to ask his dad to live with him on the farm as part of his retirement, this way he could help out if he wanted. He knew his dad would be ecstatic. But little did Ben know that there was more to the farm than meets the eye.

Lifelong Dream

Ben had a soft smile on his face as he smelled the wet compact dirt and fresh rain in the trees. He was enjoying his stroll around the new property. He discovered a nice open field behind the barn where he imagined he could grow crops with his dad. He wondered why the old man never grew any crops there, but as he took a few steps closer, he spotted something. He saw something very odd in the field and he was desperate to get some answers.

Interesting Find

There was a small crater in the middle of the field. Ben now knew that that was why the old man never grew any crops there. But he still wondered why the old couple never filled the crater in. Ben could tell that it was no normal crater. Then and there, he got his cellphone out of his pocket and called the previous owner. He was desperate to find out what was going on. The old man was the only person that could give him the answers he needed.

Small Crater

The old man finally answered the phone, he sounded surprised to hear from Ben just an hour after they had left. But as soon as Ben explained why he was calling, the old man went silent. The old man wasn’t chatty to begin with, but Ben knew he didn’t want to say anything. Had the old man scammed him when he bought the property from him? The old man’s response was more of a riddle than an answer. He told Ben that it all circled back to the “rock.”

Getting Answers

Once Ben had ended the call, he realized that he now had a lot more questions than answers. The old man had mentioned the doorstop that they used to keep the barn doors open, so Ben knew that he had to take a closer look at it. He walked back to the barn and found the rock sitting on the dusty ground. The rock must have been laying there for a while because it was covered in mud. But Ben could tell that there was something strange about it. He decided to make a call.

Ben knew that the best way to get to the bottom of this was to make a phone call. The old man had given him enough tips that he knew exactly who to call. He dialed the number of a professor from the state’s university. But once he described the rock to the man, he seemed to get nervous. What was going on with the rock that two people were now in on it but not him? The professor told him he’d be down to the farm to look at it in the next hour.

Making The Call

It must have been a big deal to the man on the phone. To drop everything and come out to look at the rock that he had been using as a doorstop. Finally, after an hour, the car arrived, and the man got out. But when the expert took one look at his rock, he stammered his word, “Do you know what you’ve found?” It was then that Ben knew that there would be no coming back from this. His life was about to turn upside down.

 A Big Deal

The expert explained to Ben that what had been used as a doorstop for 50 years was something much, much older than that. Any specialists in the community would be fuming if they knew it had been used for such an arbitrary purpose. Ben asked him what implications it had on him. The expert told him that to discover something this big was like the Holy Grail of his field. And that it was also worth a great deal to get his hands on it.

Not Just A Doorstop

What the expert was talking about was the best meteorite find he had ever made. It was worth a fortune so that it could be studied and looked at using expert tools. Ben couldn’t believe his luck. The rock was special. But after seeing how much it meant to a meteorologist, he felt torn. On the one hand, it was the most special thing he had ever owned. But on the other hand, he knew that the scientific community could really use it. What would he do?

A Meteorite

Ben was assured that the meteorite would be sold to a museum like the Smithsonian after it was studied. That meant that thousands of people could look at and appreciate the rock just like he did. He felt that it was only fair to let other people enjoy the meteorite and not just hang onto it himself. And as a nice bonus, he’d be able to get a headstart on getting his new farm life started.

To Be Appreciated By All

Ben made up his mind. He decided that he would sell the rock to the museum after it was studied. The enormous figure he was being offered was more than enough to help him get all of the things he needed on the farm. Samples of the meteor were sent off to a lab, and it ended up having rare elements that increased its value even more. Ben counted his lucky stars that his property came with more than just a building. It came with a future.
