Message of hope in Stephen Hawking's final farewell

04-23-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency is a special tribute to the late physicist Stephen Hawking, who shares his final message to mankind.

Hawking’s words are illuminated by music from Greek composer Vangelis.

In the summer of 2018, the ESA worked with Hawking’s family to transmit his final farewell directly toward the nearest black hole. At the speed of light, the message will reach the black hole 1A 0620-00 in the constellation of Monoceros in about 3,500 years.

The ESA shared the incredible tribute with the world on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

“On 22 April 2020, Earth Day, we’re transmitting this poignant message to all of planet Earth as a message of hope, to say that, by working together, we can overcome this crisis and others facing humankind.”
