Agricultural irrigation causing significant groundwater depletion

03-30-2017

Today’s Video of the Day comes from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and illustrates how agricultural irrigation systems are causing serious groundwater depletion, especially in dry areas.

Keeping up with the international food trade has caused many underground aquifers to be overexploited and could result in serious food crises should they completely dry up.

The video comes in conjunction with a new study by researchers at Goddard and the University College London and published in Nature. The study found that 11% of global non-renewable groundwater drawn up for irrigation goes to produce crops traded on the international market.
