Protecting Earth from space hazards
Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency describes the Space Safety Program, which aims to address major threats to our planet from hazards such as asteroids and space weather.
Some of the primary objectives of the program include: the capability to provide early warnings for large asteroids as much as three weeks in advance, and the capability to capture and deorbit space objects that are no longer functional.
The project also sets forth the ambitious goal of testing and exercising an early warning system for space weather events originating from the sun that can provide actionable information to users.
