Sevengill sharks emerge as great whites vanish

02-19-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the University of Miami reveals the unexpected ecosystem changes that scientists found off the coast of South Africa following the decline of great white sharks in the area.

For nearly two decades, the researchers documented the presence of great white sharks near Seal Island. This site is well-known for spotting great whites that launch themselves out of the water in pursuit of seals.

For unknown reasons, the great whites began to vanish from the area in 2015. The research team noted that their disappearance coincided with the appearance of sevengill sharks, another top predator from an entirely different region.

The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.
