The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius),rechristened black woodpeckers,is a species of bird piciforme the family of woodpeckers (Picidae) that mature temperate and boreal forests is distributed Europe and Asia.It is not threatened globally,and its population is estimated between 1,500,000 and 2,900,000.It is a large woodpecker: it measures 40 to 46 cm long and has a wing span between 67 and 76 cm.Its plumage is completely black,except for the pileus (upper part of the head),where it has a red spot.The sexes differ in that in the male the red spot completely covers the pileus,and in the female only the back is red.
