Description

Pteropus lylei is a species of bat in the Pteropodidae family.Pteropus lylei is a mammalian species described by K.Andersen in 1908.Pteropus lylei is part of the genus Pteropus and the family flyghund.The IUCN categorizes the species globally as vulnerable.No subspecies are listed.The species resembles Pteropus giganteus but it is smaller with 145 to 160 mm long forearms.The underside is generally darker with Pteropus lylei and the ears are prettier.Individuals reach a wingspan of about 900 mm and a weight of 390 to 480 g.The head is characterized by an elongated nose and large eyes.At the shoulders there is an orange collar.The flight membrane and the fur on the upper side have a dark brown color.This flying dog occurs in southern Thailand (without the Malacka Peninsula ),southern Cambodia and southern Vietnam.A secluded population exists in southern China.The habitat consists of mangroves and orchards.The individuals form large colonies that rest in the crowns of the trees.Like other flying dogs,the species mainly eats ripe fruits supplemented with nectar and pollen.The food is found with the help of the sight and the smell.Ecolocalization typical of several other bats does not occur in Pteropus lylei.Individuals are mostly night-active but they may be loud at rest.The fly dog ​​may host a virus from the Paramyxoviridae family.It does not bother but the virus can be transmitted to humans.
