Description

The fox greater wheel of the Mascarene (Pteropus niger Kerr,1792) is a bat belongs to the family of Pteropodidi,endemic to the island of Mauritius,in ' Indian Ocean.The fur is long,squashed on the back and erected on the nape and neck.The sides of the back,of the rump and the head are brownish-yellow,while the central part of the back,the ventral parts and the shoulders are brownish-black.The snout is long and tapered,the eyes are big.The ears are small,partially hidden in the fur and with a concavity on the back edge just below the pointed end.The wings are blackish and attached along the sides of the body.It is tailless while the uropatage is reduced to a thin membrane along the inside of the lower limbs,unusually more developed in the middle.
