Description

Pteropus yapensis is a bat from the genus Pteropus that occurs on the atoll Yap in the west of Micronesia.This species is often counted as a subspecies to P.mariannus.The species is threatened by trade to Guam (meat dog is a delicacy in the Marians ),butthis trade has now endeddue to CITES.In 1981 it was estimated that only about a thousand individuals were left.P.yapensis is a medium-sized species.The top of the body is black with scattered silver-gray hair,the bottom is brown.The shoulders are yellow-brown.For the holotype,the forearm length is 130 mm,the tibia length is 54.6 mm and the ear length is about 25 mm.
