Description

Bolborhinum tricorne is a species of beetle in the family Geotrupidae. It lives in Chile. Bolborhinum is a genus of beetles belonging to the group Scarabaeoidea. Medium-sized (7.5 - 22 millimeters), broad and highly arched, shiny, reddish-brown to black thorny. The head is large and broad, in the male preferably with one, two or three horns. Pronotum is broad, rounded, in the male broadly hollowed out in the middle, but without horns or spines. The cover wings are vaulted with fine rows of dots. The legs are strong digging bones, the legs are curved, on the forelegs with blunt teeth along almost the entire outer edge, not just at the tip. The underside is covered with yellowish hair. Like the Thordivels, these beetles dig long passages, which they fill with humus or manure that the larvae eat. The adult beetles fly well. The beetles live in fairly dry areas, both steppe landscapes and open forests, at an altitude of up to 2,500 meters along the slopes of the Andes Mountains. The species lives in southwestern South America (Chile and Argentina), along the Andes.
