Commerson’s dolphin

Description

The cefalorinco Commerson (Cephalorhynchus commersonii (Lacépède,1804)) is one of four dolphins like Cephalorhynchus.Commerson's cephalorinc has a very characteristic appearance.It has the head,the curved dorsal fin and the black tail,with the white throat and body.The demarcation between the two colors is very clear.In shape and size the creature is stocky and grows up to about 1.7 m.Its weight reaches up to 60 kg.Its appearance resembles that of a porpoise,but its conspicuous behavior is typical of a dolphin.The dorsal fin has a long,narrow front end that ends in a curved tip.The back is normally concave,but not stride.The tail has a notch in the middle.This dolphin has no rostrum and the hydrodynamic muzzle with large jaws.On the lower part of the abdomen the female has a black spot that looks like an arrowhead;while in the male the stain remembers a tear.The little ones are born blacks,browns and grays,then they become blacks and grays and finally the gray parts become white.Females reach reproductive age between six and nine years.Males reach sexual maturity at about the same age.Mating occurs in spring and summer and delivery takes place after a gestation period of 11 months;gives birth to a puppy as large as half of the mother to childbirth and weaning occurs after one year from birth.The oldest known Commerson cephalorph died at age 18.In captivity they live for more than 26 years.
