Description

The Bat Ghost ( Macroderma gigas Dobson,1880 ) is a bat of the family of Megadermatidi,the only species of the genus Macroderma (Miller,1906),widespread in Australia.The dorsal parts are whitish with the tips of the light brownish-gray hairs,while the ventral parts,the head,the ears,the nasal leaf and the wing membranes are light brown.Some populations of Queenslandthey are much darker.The snout is wide,with the lower lip extending beyond the upper one,the eyes are relatively large and surrounded by darker rings.The nasal leaf is long,with convex edges,the anterior diskidal portion and is crossed longitudinally by a relief.The ears are long and erect,joined together along the inner margin about half of their length.The claws are robust and curved.The end of the second finger extends beyond the first phalanx of the third.The tail is reduced to a tubercle partially hidden in the fur and completely included in the extensive uropatage.
