The birdwing pearlymussel is a rare species of freshwater mussel in the family Unionidae, the river mussels. This aquatic bivalve is native to Tennessee and Virginia in the United States. Its range has declined over 90%. It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.  Birdwing Pearlymussel Lemiox rimosus. Extirpated. Endemic to Tennessee River system. Historically occurred downstream to Muscle Shoals. Not reported since the river was impounded. Reintroduction program for Wilson Dam tailwaters underway. Listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
