Melanochelys tricarinata was originally described as Geomyda tricarinata by Blyth (1856) and corrected to Geoemyda by Gray (1870). McDowell (1964) split up the genus, and placed both G. tricarinata and G. trijuga in Gray’s 1869 genus Melanochelys. The tricarinate hill turtle or three-keeled land turtle (Melanochelys tricarinata) is a species of turtle found in northeastern India, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
