It is endemic to Hawaii, where it is known only from the island of Maui. It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States. Like other Hawaiian Melicope, this species is known as alani.The alani (Melicope adscendens) is a shrub with long, slender, sprawling branches that are covered with fine, yellowish to golden brown or gray hairs when young, but becoming smooth when older. The leaves are arranged in opposite fashion on the stems, and are widely spaced, leathery to papery in texture, elliptical in shape, and hairless.
