Narcissus generic name that makes reference of the young narcisista of the Greek mythology Νάρκισσος ( Narkissos ) son of the river God Cephissus and of the nymph Leiriope ; that was distinguished by its beauty. The name derives from the Greek word : ναρκὰο, narkào (= narcotic) and refers to the penetrating and intoxicating smell of the flowers of some species (some argue that the word derives from the Persian word نرگس and that it is pronounced Nargis , which indicates that this plant is intoxicating). poeticus : latin epithet meaning "of poets".
