Description

Camassia leichtlinii, commonly known as Leichtlin's Camass, is a bulbous plant with bluish purple, bright blue or creamy white flowers. Camassia leichtlinii was already described and the name validly published by John Gilbert Baker. It was not until 1885, however, that Sereno Watson reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics. Camassia leichtlinii is a species in the genus Camassia (quamash) which contains approximately 14 to 15 species and belongs to the family of the Hyacinthaceae (Hyacinth Family). In flowering the plants grow to a height of approximately 0,6 to 1,3 metres. Camassia leichtlinii is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves appear at the base of the plant. They are linear with entire margins. The leaves are up to 60 centimetres long and to 2,5 centimetres wide. The flowers are six-petaled. The plants bloom from April to May. The flowers are arranged in loose racemes. The fruits are loculicidal capsules.
