Description

Polygonatum is a genus with 50 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae , previously classified in the family Liliaceae. Perennial rhizomatous herbs, sympodiales. Erect stem. Leaves alternate, opposite or whorled, sessile or little petiolate, ovate-elliptic, linear to linear-lanceolate. Axillary inflorescence, umbellate, in corymb or cluster or a solitary flower; bracts present or absent. Flowers usually pendular, rarely erect, bisexual, hypogynous; pedicels articulated at the apex. Fruit a globose berry. Some species of this genus have medicinal properties and in particular P. sibiricum , used as an herbal tisane in traditional Chinese medicine , also called Duong Gul Le in Korea. Polygonatum species are edible, cooked as the asparagus , as are the roots after an appropriate treatment - being a good source of starch.
