Description

Discocactus horstii is a species of plant in the genus Discocactus in the cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet Horstii honors Leopoldo Horst, the discoverer of the species. Discocactus horstii grows solitary, with brownish green, flattened spherical bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 2 centimeters and a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. The 15 to 22 rounded ribs are 6 to 8 millimeters high. The initially white felty areoles later become soon. There are up to 8 calcareous greyish-white spines up to 7.5 millimeters long, curved backwards and lying on the body surface. The cephalium, made of white wool and some brownish bristles up to 2 centimeters long, is up to 1.5 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 2 centimeters. The tubular white flowers are up to 7.5 centimeters long and reach 6 centimeters in diameter. The cylindrical to club-shaped, white fruits are up to 3 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 millimeters. Discocactus horstii is distributed in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The first description was in 1973 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo. Discocactus horstii is listed inAppendix Iof theWashington Conventionon International Trade in Endangered Species. In the 2002 IUCNRed List of Threatened Speciesit was listed as " Endangered (EN) ". H. classified as critically endangered. After the 2013 revision of the list, the species is classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
